What does offshore mean for a VPS?

Offshore means outside your own country. A VPS is offshore when the company that rents it, the datacenter that runs it, or both, are in another country than you.

An offshore VPS is a virtual server rented from a company or datacenter outside your own country, chosen for its laws on privacy, data requests and takedown notices.

The word is relative. A server in Amsterdam is offshore for a buyer in the United States or Brazil. It is not offshore for a buyer in Rotterdam, as the page on is a Netherlands VPS considered offshore explains. Two laws matter for every offshore VPS: the law of the datacenter's country and the law of the host company's country.

How does an offshore VPS work?

An offshore VPS works like any VPS: one physical server is split into virtual machines, and you rent one of them. Each VPS gets its own CPU share, RAM, disk and IP address, and you manage it as root.

OffshoreKVM, a no-KYC offshore VPS host, uses KVM, the virtualization built into the Linux kernel. Each KVM virtual machine has its own private virtual hardware and runs its own kernel. Root access over SSH with your own public key; password login is off by default. Linux only: Debian, Ubuntu, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. No Windows.

What changes offshore is not the technology. It is who runs the server, under which law, and what the host asks of you before you can rent it.

How is an offshore VPS different from a regular VPS?

An offshore VPS differs from a regular VPS in its jurisdiction, its signup and its rules on complaints, not in its hardware. A regular host is usually in your own country, asks for a card or ID, and follows local takedown rules.
