Why most VPS hosts close port 25, which offshore hosts keep it open, and what still works on a VPS where it is closed.

**Quick answer — Can I host an email server on an offshore VPS?**

You can host an email server on an offshore VPS only where outgoing port 25 is open. On **OffshoreKVM**, it is closed on every VPS and stays closed. A VPS from $3.08 can still send mail through a mail provider on ports 465 or 587. On 29 October 2026, 4 of 36 offshore hosts we checked kept port 25 open by default. No KYC, pay in crypto.

## Email on OffshoreKVM: what works and what does not

| Attribute | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Outgoing port 25 | Outgoing port 25 (SMTP) is closed on every VPS to stop spam, and it stays closed. Ports 465 and 587 to mail providers stay open |
| Sending from apps | Works: your app or mail software logs in to a mail provider on port 465 or 587, and the provider delivers |
| A server that delivers mail itself | Not possible on OffshoreKVM: it needs outgoing port 25 |
| Receiving mail (MX) | OffshoreKVM publishes no promise for incoming port 25, so keep your MX records at a mail host |
| Bulk email | Not allowed on any plan, whatever the port |
| Hosts with port 25 open by default | Kyun, AliasVPS, VPSBG and NiceVPS (29 October 2026) |
| Standard ports | 25 for server-to-server relay, 587 for submission, 465 for submission over TLS |

## Why do most VPS hosts close port 25?

Hosts close outgoing port 25 because mail servers use it to deliver to each other, and spam from new servers travels the same way. **Port 25 carries mail from server to server; ports 587 and 465 carry mail from a user or an app to its own mail provider, after a login.** RFC 6409 keeps relay on port 25 and reserves 587 for submission. RFC 8314 adds 465 for submission over TLS from the first byte.

**According to OffshoreKVM's check of 29 October 2026, 4 of 36 active offshore VPS hosts kept outgoing port 25 open by default.** Eleven blocked it but opened it on request or under conditions. Njalla blocks it and points to outside SMTP services. The others gave no rule on the pages we read, or set one per server line.

## Which offshore hosts keep port 25 open?

Kyun, AliasVPS, VPSBG and NiceVPS kept outgoing port 25 open by default on 29 October 2026. They are the hosts to look at for a self-hosted mail server; the others ask for a ticket, a deposit or account history first.

Also blocked by default and opened on request: Cloudzy (25, 465, 587 and 2525; not guaranteed), HOSTKEY (25, 465 and 587; ID at signup) and Shinjiru (after verification). ## What can I do with email on OffshoreKVM instead?

On OffshoreKVM you send mail through a provider, and you keep mailboxes and MX records at a mail host. **On a VPS with port 25 closed, your server still sends mail: it hands each message to a mail provider over port 465 or 587, and the provider delivers it.**

- **App and website mail:** password resets, alerts, order notices and contact forms go out through your provider's SMTP server. Use port 465 (TLS from the start) or 587, with the username and password the provider gives you.
- **A mail server that relays:** Postfix or another mail server on the VPS can forward everything to that provider as a relay host on port 587 or 465.
- **Mailboxes:** keep them at a mail host, and run your website or app on the VPS.

Unlike FlokiNET, Servers.Guru, Cloudzy and HOSTKEY, OffshoreKVM keeps 465 and 587 open, so this works on day one. Read [what is not allowed on OffshoreKVM](https://offshorekvm.com/acceptable-use/ "OffshoreKVM acceptable use policy") before you send anything in volume.

## What does a self-hosted mail server need besides port 25?

A mail server that delivers on its own also needs reverse DNS, SPF, DKIM and DMARC, or other servers reject or file its mail. The PTR record of the IP must match the server's name. SPF lists the IPs allowed to send for your domain. DKIM signs each message, and DMARC tells receivers what to do when checks fail.

FlokiNET asks for SPF, DKIM and DMARC before it opens port 25. Kyun lets you set reverse DNS yourself. ## Does an offshore VPS make email more private?

An offshore VPS changes which law covers the data stored on it, not how mail travels. Each message you send also sits on the recipient's mail server, under that provider's rules. The server's own side is covered by OffshoreKVM's terms: No logs: we keep no connection logs, no traffic logs and no IP addresses of visitors or customers, on the website, the dashboard or the VPS. OffshoreKVM is run by DomaineGoat LLC, a company registered in Panama, and answers only to Panamanian law. The datacenter that houses each VPS is in its own country and follows that country’s law. The page on [what your VPS provider can see on your server](https://offshorekvm.com/what-can-my-vps-provider-see/ "What a VPS host can and cannot see") explains the rest.
